Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to question particular rulings made by the official, following the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
